The RSS tracking feature was limited to the experimental Canary versions of Chrome on Android, but today the company has started enabling it on stable versions of the browser, according to Adrienne Porter Felt, a director of engineering on Chrome.

• Google sends out more invitations to join ‘Pixel Superfans’ community - Google has operated a “community” of Pixel’s “biggest fans” since at least 2019 — if not earlier. Earlier this week, Made by Google launched a new round of invites to join “Pixel Superfans.”

• Leaked internal factory videos show Pixel 6 Pro teardown & assembly process - With two weeks before Google officially announces and details the Pixel 6, more and more about the flagship devices are emerging. The latest Pixel 6 Pro leak is quite odd and appears to be internal assembly and teardown videos of the unreleased phone.

• Apple appeals ruling in Epic Games case and App Store changes could be delayed - Back in September, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers finally announced her decision in the case of Apple vs. Epic Games. Judge Rogers ruled that Apple could no longer forbid developers from redirecting users to third-party payment systems, but Apple is now appealing that ruling — which could delay such changes by years.

• Ex-Apple employee accused of leaking trade secrets now under criminal investigation - We learned back in May this year that Apple filed a lawsuit against its former materials lead, Simon Lancaster for allegedly stealing trade secrets about “Project X,” leaking them to the media, and more. Now in new legal documents, it’s surfaced that the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office has an open criminal investigation into Lancaster regarding Apple’s claims.

• When is Apple releasing a new MacBook Pro, and should you buy now or wait? - Rumors have long suggested that Apple is working on a new MacBook Pro refresh with Apple Silicon on the inside, a new design, and much more.

• Apple Japanese antitrust investigation opens, six weeks after another one closed - An Apple Japanese antitrust investigation was closed last month when the Cupertino company made a major concession. But just six weeks later, a new antitrust investigation has been opened in Japan, into the market dominance of iOS and Android.

How are you doing? I am writing this newsletter on a macOS 12 beta. Looks like all the beta released in the last month (macOS, iPadOS, iOS and Android 12) are without breaking issues. I installed iOS 15 on my secondary iPhone and used for a week and installed it on the main device today. Hope nothing breaks in future beta.

The week has been going great with plenty of announcements from WWDC 21. I really loved all the new features in iOS, macOS and iPad OS. But as an honest user, I think I would use only these features in my day-to-day flow:

• Focus feature throughout the Apple ecosystem.

• Redesigned Safari Tabs

• Live Text in Photos

• Quick Note

• App Library and Widgets on Home Screen on iPadOS

• Notification summary

• Universal Control

• Airplay to Mac

• Low power mode on macOS.

Let's talk a bit about Android. Google have released Android 12 beta 2 which includes much needed Privacy Dashboard, Mic and Camera indicators, Microphone & Camera toggles, Clipboard read notification and more intuitive connectivity experience. • PSA: iPhone users reporting ‘SIM Failure’ error after updating to iOS 14.7 beta 2 - Apple today released iOS 14.7 beta 2 for developers, and while bugs and other weird issues are quite common in beta software, sometimes they can make your device nearly unusable. According to some reports, today’s beta seems to be causing a “SIM Failure” error for iPhone users.

• Hands-on with an early build of Fuchsia OS [Video] - With the combination of Google’s official release and some fantastic work by the developers of Dahlia OS, with the help of an emulator, we’re all now able to go hands-on with Fuchsia OS to try it for ourselves.

• Apple announces AirTag privacy improvements, Android app coming this year - Apple has announced a handful of changes designed to improve the privacy of AirTag item trackers. • Twitter for iOS rolling out redesign with dedicated tab for Spaces - Twitter is beginning to roll out a notable redesign to its iPhone app today. For $2.99 per month, users can unlock additional functionality including the ability to undo a just-sent tweet (not quite the edit button that everyone wants), and access to new theming and bookmarking features.

• Official hint at WhatsApp iPad app in interview with Mark Zuckerberg - It’s been almost two years since the first reliable rumor that there is a WhatsApp iPad app in the works, but the company has now dropped an official hint that this may finally be arriving in the coming months.

• Tim Cook announces hybrid work plan for Apple employees, three days per week in-person - Apple has laid out a formal plan to begin bringing all of its staff back to the office following more than a year of remote work prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a memo sent to employees today, Tim Cook outlined that Apple expects staff to return to the office three days a week starting in early September. A hybrid approach will be taken until at least 2022.

• Gallery: Swift Student Challenge winners begin receiving exclusive WWDC21 swag - Apple officially announced the winners of its WWDC Swift Student Challenge yesterday. Following that announcement, the first swag packs have started arriving to developers with a beanie, enamel pins, and more.

Facebook today presented the Messenger API for Instagram, WhatsApp Business API, Login Connect with Messenger, and more during its F8 Refresh developers conference.

• Swift 5.4 Released! - Swift 5.4 is now officially released! This release contains a variety of language and tooling improvements.

• Google Developer Student Clubs in India build Android Apps with Kotlin - Google Developer Student Clubs recently hosted Android Study Jams, a collection of community-organized study groups, in 275 campuses across India. These study jams helped students build Android apps in the Kotlin programming language via a curriculum provided by Google.

• Twitter registers growth in active users amidst discussions about COVID-19 pandemic - The company closed 2020 with an average of 199 million active users per day, which is almost 20% more when compared to the 166 million active users in 2019.

• Apple (AAPL) reports record Q2 2021 earnings: $89.6 billion in revenue, up 54% YOY - Apple (AAPL) has officially reported its earnings for fiscal Q2 2021, covering the months of January, February, and March. For the quarter, Apple reported $89.6 billion in revenue and profit of $23.6 billion.

• Alphabet reports Q1 2021 revenue of $55.3 billion - Alphabet today announced Q1 2021 earnings with $55.3 billion in revenue. These numbers range from January to March, and reflect an increasing return to normal in some industries.

• Google cracking down on misleading Android app names, graphics in the Play Store - Google today announced new policies and guidelines for how Android apps can present themselves in the Play Store. This is meant to ensure that end users are not misled by app listings.

• Scott Forstall deposition in Epic vs Apple case focuses on early days of the iPhone and App Store - Ahead of the Epic vs Apple trial officially kicking off next week, Epic Games today has released transcripts of depositions it held with current and former Apple executives. While the Eddy Cue deposition revealed details about Apple bringing iMessage to Android, Scott Forstall’s deposition proivdes an interesting look at the early days of the iPhone’s development.

• Epic deposition reveals Eddy Cue pushed to bring iMessage to Android in 2013, but was overruled - New filings in the Epic vs. Apple legal battle have shed additional light on Apple’s decision-making process regarding bringing iMessage to Android. As it turns out, Apple senior VP Eddy Cue pushed for iMessage to come to Android in 2013, but was overruled by other Apple executives.

• Why Apple’s new privacy feature is such a big deal - Apple’s latest iPhone update, iOS 14.5, brings a host of new features that customers will likely see and enjoy — better Face ID unlocking when wearing a mask (for Apple Watch users only), new emoji, support for PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers, and more. But the new update also adds a much more important and controversial new feature: App Tracking Transparency. That’s Apple’s name for a privacy feature that’s shaping up to be the company’s next big fight.

• Upcoming AppTrackingTransparency requirements - With the upcoming public release of iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, and tvOS 14.5, all apps must use the AppTrackingTransparency framework to request the user’s permission to track them or to access their device's advertising identifier. Unless you receive permission from the user to enable tracking, the device's advertising identifier value will be all zeros and you may not track them.

• App Store submission update - Starting April 26, 2021, all iPhone and iPad apps submitted to the App Store must be built with Xcode 12 and the iOS 14 SDK or later. The iOS SDK provides access to exciting new features like App Clips, Home screen widgets, ARKit, RealityKit, and much more.

• Microsoft Edge, Apple’s Safari, and Firefox have no plans to adopt Google’s FLoC initiative - After Google started rolling out FLoC to some Chrome users as a replacement for third-party cookies, the technology has become rather controversial. • Facebook adds state vaccine information to the top of the News Feed for US users - As all adults across the US become eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, Facebook is making it easier for its users to find information based on where they live. The company has started rolling out a feature that adds a box with state-specific information about where to get a COVID-19 vaccine at the top of the News Feed for every US user living in a state where the general public is eligible to receive the shot.

• Samsung tries to woo iPhone users with a browser-based Galaxy test drive - Samsung has released a new website to give iPhone users “a little taste of Samsung” from their mobile browser. When visited on an iPhone, the site prompts users to add it to their phone’s home screen, after which it turns into a shortcut to a simulated Samsung Galaxy device. The site appears to be the work of Samsung New Zealand, MacRumors reports.

• Facebook’s first crack at a Clubhouse competitor is a new Q&A platform called Hotline - Facebook’s experimental app development division, the NPE Team, has released a new Q&A platform that borrows concepts from buzzy, audio-only social network Clubhouse but with dashes of live-streaming thrown in.

• Flappy Bird clone hacked into playable macOS push notification - In a new video, a developer has shown off a playable version of viral hit Flappy Bird running inside a macOS push notification. It’s the work of Neil Sardesai, who previously made headlines with a clip of Pong running inside a macOS app icon. The hack has yet to receive a public release, but it’s still a neat proof of concept.

• Apple refuses request to testify for Senate app store hearing - Senate Judiciary Committee leaders are demanding that Apple provide a witness for an upcoming hearing on app stores and digital competition after the iPhone manufacturer has refused to participate, according to a new letter to the company released.

• Analysts expect Apple to grow 15% this year as work-from-home activities boost sales - In a new investors note, analysts at Morgan Stanley anticipate that Apple is expected to grow 15.1% over the next 12 months. Besides the strong sales of the iPhone 12 lineup, the company should benefit from prolonged work-from-home activities as customers are now buying more computers and tablets.

• iOS 14.4 RC now available to developers, here are the full release notes - The Release Candidate version of iOS 14.4 is now available to developers. Apple has also published the full release notes for the update, including new details on improvements to the Camera app, bug fixes, and much more.

• macOS Big Sur 11.2 beta 2 removes filter that lets Apple apps bypass third-party firewalls - Back in November, some developers raised concerns due to a change in macOS Big Sur, which allowed Apple apps to bypass firewall filters in any situation. Since this could lead to security and privacy breaches, Apple has removed this list of exceptions from macOS Big Sur 11.2.

• Google Maps ‘2020 Timeline update’ recaps your travels trends - One of the more useful features made possible by enabling Location History on Android is the Google Maps Timeline. In addition to a monthly recap, Google Maps is sending out a “2020 Timeline update” that is obviously impacted by the last 12 months but still provides useful local stats.

• Google Meet adds ‘Troubleshooting’ menu for real-time network, system performance stats - A handful of factors play into the quality of your video call, and Google Meet now wants to “make it easier for end-users to understand how their local desktop and network environments affect meeting quality” with a new Troubleshooting menu.

• All the ways Windows 10X looks and acts like Chrome OS [Gallery] - Windows 10X was originally intended to debut on dual-screen devices, like the Surface Neo, before later coming to laptops. Last May, Microsoft announced a “pivot” to “focus toward single-screen Windows 10X devices” amid the work-from-home surge. A “near-final version” of Windows 10X has now leaked, and it reveals some key similarities to Chrome OS.

• Sony is buying anime streaming service Crunchyroll from AT&T for $1.175 billion - Sony will be buying anime streaming service Crunchyroll from AT&T for $1.175 billion, Sony and AT&T announced Wednesday. Specifically, Crunchyroll will become part of Sony’s Funimation, which already licenses many popular shows such as Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, and One Piece.

• Tripadvisor app pulled from App Store in China, with 104 other apps - The Tripadvisor app has been pulled from Apple’s App Store, along with 104 other apps. The Chinese government said that this was part of a ‘clean up’ of the Internet – though it has likely been done for political reasons. Apple has also sent an email to Chinese games developers who have not yet provided proof of approval from the government, warning them that their apps will be removed on January 1

• California finally rolls out COVID-19 iPhone contact tracing based on Apple’s Exposure Notifications - After launching a pilot program for digital contact tracing last month, the state of California has made contract tracing available today, December 10. That’s about half a year after Apple/Google made the feature available on iPhone and Android. But better late than never as the support will allow the almost 40 million people living in California to stay safer amid the pandemic.

• Tim Cook to deliver a speech at the United Nations Climate Ambition Summit this weekend - As reported by Reuters, Apple has announced that CEO Tim Cook will speak at the United Nations Climate Ambition Summit this weekend. Cook will deliver the address on Saturday, December 12, alongside a lineup of other speakers and guests.

• Apple to ban X-Mode tracking SDK from the App Store, developers given two weeks to comply - Apple and Google are both cracking down on applications that integrate the X-Mode Social tracking software. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Apple has informed developers that they have two weeks to remove X-Mode’s trackers from their applications.

• A bug that disables all on-device sensors supposedly spreading to some Pixel 5 units - A long-standing device sensor issue that has affected a minority of Pixel owners now appears to be affecting some Pixel 5 units.

• Apple hires venture capitalist Josh Elman to help improve App Store discovery - Apple has hired Josh Elman, a prominent venture capitalist and former vice president of product at stock-trading app Robinhood, to help it improve iOS app discovery in the App Store. Elman announced the news via his Twitter account on Monday, saying he’s also leaving his role as a board partner at the firm Greylock Partners and as a board member of prominent tech companies like Discord and Medium.

• UK bans the installation of new Huawei 5G equipment from September - The UK government is banning the installation of new Huawei 5G equipment from September 2021 as part of its plans to phase out the Chinese firm’s technology by 2027, The Financial Times reports. The decision follows the government’s announcement in July that firms would be barred from buying new equipment from January 2021 over national security concerns.

• Developers can now sign up for Apple’s reduced 15 percent App Store cut - Apple has opened enrollment in its new small business program that will allow eligible app developers to receive 15 percent more from App Store sales, the company announced on Thursday. Apple says “the vast majority of developers on the App Store who sell digital goods and services are eligible” and all developers need to do to qualify is complete the company’s enrollment form available online.

• Amazon Web Services now offers Mac instances based on Mac mini; M1 coming later - Amazon Web Services (AWS) is now offering Mac instances to developers who want to speed up building and testing of Mac, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS apps. The instances are based on physical Mac minis, and you get exclusive access to a machine while you are using it.

• Users can now share in-app purchases and subscriptions via iCloud Family Sharing - Earlier this year at WWDC 2020, Apple announced a major change to its in-app purchases system that would let users share in-app paid content with the family. This option is now officially available for developers and users running iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur.

• You can now submit your own Google Maps Street View photos from Android - Google has upgraded its Street View app on Android to allow you to capture and submit your own Street View photos with nothing more than your phone.

More specifically, there are users complaining about Bluetooth connectivity issues with the new M1 Mac mini.

• France sends ‘Apple tax’ demands; sparks new trade war fears - France has begun asking US tech giants for what has been labeled an ‘Apple tax’ – a specific tax on tech giants which the country considers tax avoiders. It has been hoped the country would agree to wait for a global agreement on the tax treatment of large tech companies, but France has now decided to proceed unilaterally.

• Facebook tweaked the News Feed to highlight more mainstream news sources after the election - Facebook, in the days after the US election, decided that an uptick in viral misinformation related to election results and President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede needed an extreme measure to be dealt with. So the company made a temporary change to its News Feed algorithm to favor mainstream news outlets, according to a report from The New York Times published on Tuesday.

• New Android App Bundle and target API level requirements in 2021 - Google Play will require new apps to use the Android App Bundle publishing format. This brings the benefits of smaller apps and simpler releases to more users and developers and supports ongoing investment in advanced distribution.

• [Android] Tips for getting your app approved for background location access - To help prevent unnecessary access to background location, the updated policy allows access only if it’s critical to the app’s core functionality and provides clear user benefit.

• Google Stadia is coming to iOS officially as a web app - Google on Thursday announced iOS support for its Stadia cloud gaming service, following in the footsteps of Microsoft in turning to the mobile web to circumvent Apple’s App Store restrictions. Google says it has been building a progressive web app version of Stadia that will run in the mobile version of Apple’s Safari browser, similar to how Microsoft intends to deliver its competing xCloud service on iOS sometime next year.

• Nvidia is bringing Fortnite back to iOS with new cloud gaming web app - Nvidia is joining its fellow cloud gaming providers in choosing to bypass Apple’s App Store and launching a mobile web app version of its GeForce Now service. • Android Studio 4.2 Canary 16

• GM is now RC: You can now submit apps built with Xcode 12.2 Release Candidate using the SDK for iOS 14.2, tvOS 14.2, watchOS 7.1, and macOS 11.0.1 Big Sur Release Candidate to the App Store.

• Apple announces special event for November 10: ‘One more thing’ - Apple has officially announced its third event in three months. The event will take place on November 10 at 10 a.m. PT, and Apple has invited everyone to tune in remotely with the tagline “One more thing.” This event is expected to focus on the upcoming transition to Apple Silicon in the Mac lineup, with Apple having promised its first Apple Silicon machine would come before the end of the year.

• Privacy-preserving features in the Mobile Driving License - Through facilities such as hardware-based Keystore, Android already offers excellent support for security and privacy-sensitive applications and in fact, it’s already possible to implement the ISO 18013-5 standard on Android without further platform changes. Many organizations participating in the ISO committee have already implemented 18013-5 Android apps.

• Apple says new ‘nutrition labels’ for app privacy will be required starting December 8 - Apple has announced today that developers will be required to provide new privacy details to users in the App Store starting December 8. These privacy “nutrition labels” were first introduced at WWDC over the summer, with Apple saying the goal is to better inform consumers of the privacy practices of individual applications.
